Job Description

English Academic Coach

Could you help KS4 pupils improve in English with the right support at the right time? Are you looking for a secondary school role that gives you strong classroom experience before teacher training?

*** English Academic Coach
*** September 2026 to July 2027
*** £85 - £105 per day
*** Large secondary, Ward of Edgbaston
*** Tailored academic support to English KS4 students

The Role:
Work with the English team to support KS4 pupils who need extra help with reading, writing, analysis, and exam preparation. You will deliver 1:1 and small-group intervention, reinforce class learning, support revision, and give teachers clear feedback on progress. Teaching assistants commonly support teachers in the classroom and help pupils with reading, writing, and learning activities.

The Candidate:
You are articulate, organised, and able to explain ideas clearly and simply. You want practical secondary school experience, enjoy helping pupils build confidence in English, and are keen to develop the classroom skills needed for a future in teaching. Secondary teachers work with students aged 11 to 18, plan and teach lessons, work with small groups, and follow safeguarding procedures, so this kind of support role offers useful exposure to that setting.

Requirements
  • Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Career Goals – A desire to train as a teacher and build a long-term career in education.

The School:
This large secondary school in the Ward of Edgbaston offers the chance to build valuable subject-based experience in a busy English department. You will join a setting where targeted intervention matters, classroom support is purposeful, and pupils benefit from extra academic guidance in the run-up to their key assessments. GOV.UK guidance updated on 20 January 2026 says work that falls within the definition of work with children is eligible for an Enhanced DBS check in the child workforce, and some roles involving regulated activity can also require a Children’s Barred List check.
