Job Description

Senior Project Engineer – Wastewater Non‑Infrastructure Projects
Join us in a role where your engineering expertise directly supports healthier rivers, resilient communities and a more sustainable future for the Thames Valley.

As a Senior Project Engineer in our Thames Valley Delivery Office, you’ll play a key role in transforming and modernising our wastewater treatment plants. From early design discussions to construction and commissioning, you’ll help shape projects that reduce storm spills, protect vital assets and upgrade the infrastructure that keeps the region flowing.

You’ll work on projects that respond to population growth, improve environmental outcomes, ensure regulatory compliance, and future‑proof essential treatment works for generations to come. It’s an opportunity to use your engineering skills while contributing to meaningful environmental and community impact.

What you’ll be doing
  • Leading the design development of multiple wastewater treatment projects from concept and feasibility through to contract award.
  • Developing clear and robust contractual briefs and compiling pre‑construction information.
  • Identifying and mitigating project risks, while recognising opportunities to support accurate pricing and scope.
  • Reviewing surveys, drawings and contractor proposals before construction begins.
  • Providing assurance of detailed designs and overseeing any design changes during construction.
  • Supporting project teams throughout commissioning and the successful handover of assets.
  • Carrying out design reviews to deliver safe, sustainable and operationally effective solutions.
  • Acting as the main point of contact for CDM Designer or Principal Designer responsibilities during the early stages of design.
  • Contributing to the ongoing improvement of our Technical Asset Standards.
  • Demonstrating and promoting our zero‑compromise approach to health, safety and wellbeing.
We’re looking for someone who:
  • Holds an HNC/HND, degree or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Is chartered or working towards chartership (other professional development pathways also considered).
  • Brings experience in wastewater treatment projects or similar highly regulated environments.
  • Is confident coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including on‑site teams, internal colleagues and external contractors.
  • Can manage several projects at once and balance competing priorities.
  • Understands the principles of project delivery in process‑driven industries.
  • Knows industrial processes related to their engineering discipline.
  • Understands Health & Safety in construction, particularly CDM Regulations 2015.
What’s in it for you?
In this role, you’ll be part of a collaborative, supportive and purpose‑driven team that delivers projects from initial design right through to construction and commissioning.

You’ll work with a wide range of colleagues and contractors across Thames Water, gaining exposure to large‑scale infrastructure projects and opportunities for continued learning, development and progression.

You’ll use your voice, your ideas and your expertise to make a tangible difference — both to the environment and to the communities we serve.
  • Competitive salary from £55,000 to £65,000 per annum.
  • Annual Leave -26 days holiday per year, increasing to 30 with the length of service. (plus bank holidays)
  • Access to many benefits to help you take care of your health and your family's health and well-being, and your finances – from annual health MOTs and access to physiotherapy and counselling to Cycle to Work schemes, shopping vouchers and life assurance.
  • Performance-related pay plan directly linked to company performance measures and targets
