Job Description
Make a real impact on the future of wastewater treatment and the communities we serve.
As a Senior Electrical Engineer within the Thames Valley Delivery Office, you’ll play a key role in transforming and modernising our wastewater treatment plants. From early technical reviews and design discussions through to project delivery, you’ll help shape solutions that are safe, sustainable and built to last.
You’ll work closely with project teams, contractors and partners to ensure designs meet the highest engineering standards while supporting innovation, environmental improvement, and the long‑term resilience of our assets. This is a role with real purpose — helping protect the environment, reduce storm spills, and future‑proof our sites for generations to come.
What you’ll be working on
You’ll contribute to a wide range of projects, including:
- Upgrading treatment works to support local population growth
- Improving effluent discharges to meet regulatory standards
- Enhancing environmental protection
- Ensuring operational sites remain safe, efficient and reliable
- Overseeing electrical design development for multiple wastewater treatment projects, from concept and feasibility through to contract award.
- Shaping clear and robust contractual project briefs from an electrical engineering perspective.
- Identifying and assessing project risks and opportunities to support accurate scope definition and contractor pricing.
- Reviewing pre‑construction surveys, drawings and design proposals from contractors.
- Providing assurance on detailed design and supporting design changes during construction.
- Supporting commissioning and handover activities, ensuring assets are delivered safely and effectively.
- Carrying out design reviews that prioritise safe, sustainable and operationally sound solutions.
- Acting as the key contact for CDM Designer or Principal Designer responsibilities and ensuring client obligations are met.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of Technical Asset Standards.
- Promoting a zero‑compromise approach to health & safety across all project activities.
- Proven experience working with LV, MV and HV systems in utilities (water, power, energy).
- Strong understanding of developing technical project solutions and contractual briefs within an electrical engineering context.
- An Electrical Engineering HNC/HND, degree or Master’s degree.
- Chartered status or working towards chartership (other professional qualifications also considered).
- Experience in wastewater treatment projects, including design or rehabilitation, ideally in both urban and environmentally sensitive areas.
- Experience working in a regulated environment.
- The ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders — internal teams, site colleagues and contractors.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritise effectively.
- Understanding of project delivery principles within process industries.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety in construction, including CDM 2015.
You’ll be part of a collaborative, supportive team at the heart of project delivery — taking schemes from initial design all the way through to construction and commissioning. You’ll work with a wide variety of people across Thames Water and our delivery partners, gaining exposure to complex engineering challenges and opportunities to shape meaningful environmental outcomes.
We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, experiences and identities. If you’re passionate about engineering, ready to make a difference and looking for a role with purpose, we’d love to hear from you.
- Competitive salary from £55,000 to £65,000 per annum.
- Annual Leave -26 days holiday per year, increasing to 30 with the length of service. (plus bank holidays)
- Access to many benefits to help you take care of your and your family’s health and well-being, and your finances – from annual health MOTs and access to physiotherapy and counselling to Cycle to Work schemes, shopping vouchers and life assurance.
- Performance-related pay plan directly linked to company performance measures and targets
